What it usually means
Bats are creatures of the night. They sleep upside down, fly in darkness and find their way by echoes rather than sight. In many Western traditions they are linked with fear and the uncanny; in China they are a sign of good fortune. Dreams about bats usually concern what lives in the dark: hidden feelings, intuition, and the ability to move through uncertainty.
The hidden is the first theme. Bats appear at dusk from caves and attics. A bat dream can point to feelings or memories that emerge only when the day's noise has quieted.
Intuition is the second. Bats navigate by sound, not sight. A bat in a dream can reflect a need to trust your inner sense rather than what you can see clearly.
Fear is the third. Many people are frightened by bats, by their sudden movement and their association with darkness. A bat flying at you can reflect anxiety about something you cannot quite see.
Perspective is another meaning. Bats hang upside down. A dream bat can suggest looking at a situation from a completely different angle.
In-between belonging is a quieter theme. Bats fly like birds but are mammals. A bat dream can reflect a feeling of being between groups, cultures or identities, fully at home in none.
Night itself is a related theme. People who work night shifts, care for babies or stay up with worries often dream of bats. The animal belongs to the hours they are living through.
Worth saying plainly: people who have had bats in their attic or seen them at dusk often dream of them without deeper meaning.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring bat dreams often appear during periods of uncertainty, when a person must act without full information and rely on intuition.
They also come to people who live between two cultures, languages or roles, and sometimes feel they belong fully to neither.
If you keep dreaming of bats, notice whether they frighten you or simply move around you. The feeling shows your current relationship with the unknown.
Some people dream of bats when they begin to explore their own darker feelings. The bat then appears as a guide rather than a threat.
In Jungian terms
One of Aesop's fables tells of a war between the birds and the beasts. The bat joined whichever side was winning: with the birds it said it had wings, with the beasts it said it had fur and teeth. When peace was made, neither side would accept it, and since then the bat has hidden by day and come out only in the dark.
Jungian readers read the fable less as a moral about disloyalty than as a picture of a being made of opposites. Living between two worlds can mean belonging nowhere — or, if accepted, it can become a gift.
A bat dream may ask how you live between your own two sides. Not choosing one — but finding a way to fly at dusk.
