What it usually means
A box holds things and hides them. It can keep something safe, store something forgotten, or contain a surprise. Dreams about boxes usually concern what is kept out of sight: secrets, feelings, memories and possibilities waiting to be opened.
Secrets are the first theme. A closed box in a dream often stands for something hidden — information you do not have, or something you know but keep to yourself.
Containment is the second. People put things in boxes to tidy them away. A dream of packing feelings or memories into boxes can reflect an attempt to manage emotions by putting them aside.
Possibility is the third. A box can hold a gift. Dreams of receiving or opening a box can carry excitement and curiosity, and point to a new opportunity whose contents you do not yet know.
Limitation is another meaning. People speak of being boxed in or thinking outside the box. A dream of being inside a box, or of a box that is too small, can reflect feeling confined by roles, rules or expectations.
Memory is a quieter theme. Old boxes in attics and cupboards hold the past. A dream of finding such a box can bring back a period of life, often with unexpected emotion.
Gifts and boxes within boxes are a related theme. Opening one box only to find another can reflect a situation with layer after layer, or a truth that takes time to reach.
Worth saying plainly: moving house, deliveries and clearing out cupboards often bring boxes into dreams. The setting may simply reflect a busy week.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring box dreams often appear during moves and clear-outs, when the past is literally being sorted.
They also come to people who keep feelings well organised and rarely look at them, as if the boxes were piling up.
People sorting the belongings of someone who has died often dream of boxes, as each one holds a piece of a life.
Others dream of boxes when they are about to receive news. The closed lid holds the waiting.
If you keep dreaming of a box you cannot open, notice what in waking life you are hesitant to know. The dream often points to it.
Some people dream of finally opening a long-closed box. The contents are often less frightening than expected.
In Jungian terms
In Greek myth, Pandora — the first woman, given gifts by all the gods — receives a jar she is told not to open. Out of curiosity she lifts the lid, and all the evils of the world fly out: sickness, toil, grief. She closes it just in time to keep one thing inside: hope. The jar became a box in later retellings through a translation slip, and "Pandora's box" entered the language.
Jungian readers have long been struck by the ending. Opening the container releases what was suppressed, painful as that is — and what remains at the bottom is hope.
A box dream may be about such an opening. What comes out first is rarely the last thing inside.
