What it usually means
A chain is made of links, each one joined to the next. It can lock a door, anchor a ship, hold a prisoner or hang as jewellery. Dreams about chains usually concern ties: what binds you, what connects you, and whether those ties feel like strength or captivity.
Restriction is the first theme. Being chained in a dream is one of the clearest images of feeling trapped — by a job, a relationship, debt, guilt or habit.
Obligation is the second. Chains can represent duties you cannot easily put down. Such dreams can reflect responsibility that feels heavy.
Connection is the third. Links hold together. A chain dream can also reflect relationships and communities in which each person depends on the others.
Strength is another meaning. A chain is as strong as its weakest link. A chain dream can point to a vulnerable point in a situation.
Patterns are a quieter theme. Chains of events, chain reactions, generations of family: a chain dream can reflect repeating sequences that are hard to break.
Value is a related idea. Gold and silver chains are worn with pride. Such dreams can reflect commitment, status or a treasured bond.
Inheritance is a related theme. Chains of generations pass things down: names, debts, habits, gifts. A chain dream can reflect what you have received from your family, and whether you want to pass it on.
Worth saying plainly: dreams of being chained can be frightening. If they come with a strong sense of being trapped in waking life, talking it through with someone you trust can help.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring chain dreams often appear in people who feel bound by obligations — caring for family, debts, contracts, roles they cannot leave.
They also come when a person is trying to break a habit or pattern that keeps returning.
If you keep dreaming of chains, notice what they are attached to. The other end of the chain often names the source.
Others dream of mending a broken chain, which can reflect a wish to restore a connection that matters.
Some people dream of chains falling away just as they make a decision to leave something. Such dreams often bring lasting relief.
In Jungian terms
The Norse gods feared the giant wolf Fenrir, who broke every iron chain they made. At last the dwarves forged a fetter called Gleipnir from six impossible things: the sound of a cat's footsteps, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and the spittle of a bird. It was as thin and soft as a silk ribbon, and it held.
Jungian readers find in Gleipnir an insight about what binds us most strongly. It is often not iron but something invisible — an idea, a fear, a promise — that holds where force would fail.
A chain dream may point to such a ribbon. The ties that bind most deeply are often the ones we cannot see.
