What it usually means
Choosing is part of every day: small choices made without thought, large ones that keep us awake. Every choice opens one way and closes others. Dreams about choosing usually concern decisions: the options in front of you, the pressure to pick, and what it costs to stay undecided.
Decisions are the first theme. Choosing in a dream often mirrors a real decision — a job, a home, a relationship — that has not yet been made.
Freedom is the second. Having choices is a sign of freedom. A choosing dream can reflect a sense of possibility, of many paths open.
Doubt is the third. Wavering between options, picking and then changing your mind, can reflect uncertainty about what you truly want.
Loss is another meaning. Each choice means giving something up. Such dreams can reflect grief for the road not taken.
Responsibility is a quieter theme. A choice makes you answerable for its result. Dreams of choosing for others can reflect the weight of deciding on someone else's behalf.
Paralysis is a related idea. Standing frozen before options can reflect fear of making a mistake, or demands pulling in different directions.
Intuition is a related theme. Sometimes in a dream the answer is simply known. Such dreams can reflect a part of you that has already decided.
Worth saying plainly: shopping, menus, forms and a pending decision at work or at home often bring choosing into dreams in plain ways.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring choosing dreams often appear before major decisions, especially those that have been put off for a long time.
They also come to people who weigh every option carefully and fear getting it wrong.
If you keep dreaming of choosing, notice which option you reach for before you hesitate. The first movement often shows what you already want.
Others dream of options that keep changing as they look at them, often when circumstances awake are uncertain.
Some people dream of a choice made long ago, coming back to be made again. Such dreams can reflect unfinished questions about the past.
In Jungian terms
A well-known puzzle in philosophy pictures a donkey standing exactly halfway between two equal bales of hay — or, in some versions, hay on one side and water on the other. With no reason to prefer either, it cannot decide, and starves. The image is named after Jean Buridan, a fourteenth-century French philosopher, though it does not appear in his surviving writings and was probably attached to him by critics of his views on the will. The idea is older still: Aristotle, in *On the Heavens*, mentions a man equally hungry and thirsty, placed at the same distance from food and drink, who stays where he is.
Jungian readers see in Buridan's ass the trap of pure reasoning: when the reasons balance perfectly, reason alone cannot move. Something else — feeling, instinct, a small preference — has to tip the scale.
A choosing dream may be asking for that small push. Neither bale is perfect; either one will feed you.
