What it usually means
A doll is a small human figure made for play, comfort or display. Children dress dolls, talk to them, put them to bed. Dreams about dolls usually concern childhood and control: memories of play, the wish to care, and the fear of being treated as an object.
Childhood is the first theme. A doll in a dream often brings back early years — toys, rooms, the people who were there.
Care is the second. Children rehearse looking after others with dolls. A doll dream can reflect nurturing instincts, or thoughts about parenthood.
Control is the third. A doll does what its owner decides. Such dreams can reflect feeling controlled by someone else, or wanting control yourself.
Appearance is another meaning. Dolls are pretty, still and silent. A doll dream can reflect pressure to look a certain way and keep quiet.
Uncanniness is a quieter theme. A doll that stares can be unsettling. Such dreams can reflect a part of you kept still too long.
Comfort is a related idea. A favourite doll is a companion in the dark. A doll dream can reflect a need for familiar comfort.
Awakening is a related theme. Dolls coming to life is an old motif. Such a dream can reflect a passive part of you starting to move.
Worth saying plainly: children's toys around the house, horror films and doll collections often bring dolls into dreams directly.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring doll dreams often appear when a person feels unseen behind a role — the good daughter, the perfect partner.
They also come to parents of young children, and to people revisiting their own childhood.
If you keep dreaming of a doll, notice whether it can move. A doll that begins to walk can follow a growing wish to act for yourself.
Others dream of a forgotten childhood doll, often at moments of change.
Some people dream of a room full of dolls looking at them. Such dreams can reflect feeling judged.
In Jungian terms
In Henrik Ibsen's play *A Doll's House* (1879), Nora Helmer seems to live a light, sheltered life with her husband Torvald, who calls her his lark and his squirrel. Years earlier, to save his health, she secretly borrowed money by forging her father's signature. When the secret comes out, Torvald turns on her; when the danger passes, he forgives her as if nothing happened. Nora sees that she has been a doll — first her father's doll-child, then her husband's doll-wife — and that their home has been a playroom. She leaves, and the play ends with the sound of a door slamming below.
Jungian readers see in Nora the moment a person steps out of a role shaped by others and begins to become themselves. The doll gains a will; the door that slams also opens.
A doll dream may be listening for that sound. Somewhere a part of you may be ready to leave the playroom.
