What it usually means
Drinking is one of the most basic acts of life. We drink to live, to refresh ourselves, to celebrate, to comfort, sometimes to forget. Dreams about drinking usually concern need and intake: what you thirst for, what you are taking in, and whether it nourishes you.
Thirst is the first theme. Being thirsty in a dream often reflects an unmet need — for love, rest, meaning or simply attention to yourself.
Refreshment is the second. Drinking cool water in a dream can reflect relief, renewal and recovery after a hard time.
Celebration is the third. Toasting, sharing wine, raising glasses: such dreams can reflect joy, connection and occasions that matter.
Forgetting is another meaning. Some drinks dull pain. A dream of drinking to forget can reflect avoidance of difficult feelings.
Absorption is a quieter theme. What you drink becomes part of you. A drinking dream can reflect ideas, influences or emotions you are taking in from others.
Dependence is a related idea. Dreams about drinking too much can reflect worry about habits — your own or someone close to you.
Hospitality is a related theme. Offering a drink to a guest is an ancient gesture of welcome. A dream of being given water can reflect kindness received; offering it can reflect your wish to help.
Ritual is another meaning. Many ceremonies include drinking — wine at weddings, tea in quiet rooms, a shared cup. Such dreams can reflect the meaning you give to shared moments.
Worth saying plainly: real thirst during the night often produces dreams of drinking. If you woke with a dry mouth, the dream may simply be the body asking for water. If dreams about alcohol worry you, talking with someone you trust or a specialist can help.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring drinking dreams often appear when a basic need has been neglected — rest, affection, creativity, time alone.
They also come to people working on habits, as the mind processes cravings and choices.
If you keep dreaming of being thirsty, ask what in waking life you are missing. The dream often knows before you do.
Some people dream of drinking from a spring or well during recovery. Such dreams often mark a return of energy.
In Jungian terms
In ancient Greece, gold tablets buried with initiates of the Orphic mysteries gave instructions for the journey after death. In the underworld, they said, the soul would find two springs. By the white cypress flowed Lethe, the water of forgetting — the soul should not drink there. Further on flowed the cold water of Mnemosyne, Memory, and the soul should ask the guardians: let me drink from the lake of Memory.
Jungian readers see in the tablets a choice that faces the living, too: whether to drink what helps us forget, or what helps us remember who we are.
A drinking dream may ask which spring you are bending over. Thirst is real — but not every water quenches it.
