What it usually means
Ears take in the world without our choosing: voices, warnings, music, gossip. They also help keep us balanced. Dreams about ears usually concern listening: what you hear and what you refuse to hear, whether others hear you, and what is said behind your back.
Listening is the first theme. Dreaming of ears often reflects attention — to advice, to a loved one, to your own inner voice.
Being heard is the second. Speaking into someone's ear, or into ears that do not respond, can reflect a need to be understood.
Secrets are the third. Whispers, overheard words and listening at doors can reflect fear of gossip, or curiosity about what others know.
Refusal is another meaning. Covering your ears in a dream can reflect not wanting to hear something — criticism, bad news or a truth you are avoiding.
Shame is a quieter theme. Ears that are too large, strange or animal-like can reflect embarrassment about something you feel others can see.
Balance is a related idea. The inner ear keeps us upright. Ear dreams can sometimes reflect a sense of being thrown off balance.
Sensitivity is a related theme. Some people hear everything and are worn down by noise. Such dreams can reflect a need for quiet.
Worth saying plainly: real sensations — an earache, ringing, a blocked ear, a noise in the room — can shape dreams. If something hurts awake, see a doctor.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring ear dreams often appear when a person feels unheard — at home, at work, in a relationship.
They also come to people who carry secrets, their own or others', and fear they will come out.
If you keep dreaming of ears, notice who is speaking and who is listening. That often reflects where attention flows in your life.
Others dream of hearing their name called, often at times when they are being asked to step forward.
Some people dream of ears that hear everything, near and far. Such dreams can reflect sensitivity, or tiredness from too much noise.
In Jungian terms
In Ovid's *Metamorphoses* (Book XI), the god Pan challenges Apollo to a musical contest, judged by the mountain god Tmolus, who gives the prize to Apollo's lyre. Only King Midas protests, preferring Pan's rustic pipes. Apollo, offended, gives him the ears of a donkey: long, grey and hairy. Midas hides them under a purple turban, but the servant who cuts his hair sees them. Unable to tell anyone and unable to keep silent, the barber digs a hole in the ground, whispers the secret into it and fills it in. Reeds grow on the spot, and when the wind stirs them, they whisper the buried words to the world.
Jungian readers see in Midas how what we try to hide tends to find its own way out. A secret buried in shame does not stay buried; it grows, and the wind carries it.
An ear dream may carry that whisper. What we hide most carefully is often what most wants to be heard.
