What it usually means
An eclipse happens when one body moves in front of another: the moon across the sun, or the earth's shadow across the moon. For a short time the familiar order of light is overturned. Dreams about eclipses usually concern change and concealment: something important hidden for a while, and the return of light.
Sudden change is the first theme. An eclipse turns day to dusk in minutes. Such dreams can reflect events that changed life quickly.
Being overshadowed is the second. One light covers another. An eclipse dream can reflect feeling eclipsed by someone — a sibling, a partner, a colleague.
Hidden light is the third. The sun does not disappear; it is covered. Eclipse dreams can reflect strengths or hopes that are out of sight for now.
Endings and beginnings are another meaning. The light always returns. An eclipse dream can mark a passage from one phase of life to the next.
Awe is a quieter theme. People stop and look up together during an eclipse. Such dreams can reflect wonder.
Fear is a related idea. In many cultures eclipses were taken as omens. An eclipse dream can reflect worry about what an unusual event might mean.
Understanding is a related theme. Eclipses can be predicted. A dream of knowing one is coming can reflect insight into patterns others do not see.
Worth saying plainly: news of an upcoming eclipse, astronomy programmes or a trip to see one often bring eclipses into dreams directly.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring eclipse dreams often appear when something central — a relationship, a role, a sense of purpose — has been temporarily hidden.
They also come to people living in someone else's shadow, at home or at work.
If you keep dreaming of an eclipse, notice the edges of the dark. A rim of light often reflects hope that has not gone out.
Others dream of an eclipse during a time of conflict, when everything seems to stop.
Some people dream of watching an eclipse with someone they love. Such dreams can reflect a wish to share wonder.
In Jungian terms
The Greek historian Herodotus tells of a war between the Lydians and the Medes that had dragged on for five years. In the sixth year, in the middle of a battle, day suddenly turned to night. Thales of Miletus, he says, had foretold this to the Ionians, naming the very year in which it would happen. When the soldiers saw the darkness, both sides stopped fighting and grew eager for peace. A treaty followed, sealed by a marriage between the two royal houses. The eclipse is usually dated to 585 BC.
Jungian readers see in the story how a shock from outside can interrupt a conflict that reason could not end. When the light fails, old enmities lose their urgency, and something larger comes into view.
An eclipse dream may arrive at such a moment. Sometimes darkness at noon is what lets the fighting stop.
