Gun

A gun is power at a distance, decided in a second. In dreams it often carries threat, anger or the question of who holds control.

What it usually means

A gun concentrates power into a single object and a single decision. That makes it a stark dream image. It usually appears when questions of control, aggression and safety are active: who has power over whom, how much anger is present, and how close a situation feels to going wrong.

When a gun is pointed at you, the dream often reflects a sense of threat — from a person, an argument, a situation at work or at home — or a fear that something will strike suddenly and from a distance. Being shot in a dream is frightening but rarely literal; it more often reflects being hurt by words, decisions or events.

When you hold the gun, the dream may be about your own power or anger. Some people feel relief in such dreams, especially when they have felt powerless in waking life; others feel horror at what they might do. Both reactions are information about how you relate to your own aggression.

The context of your life matters. If guns are part of your work, hobby, culture or history, the dream may be literal or practical. Dreams also borrow freely from films, news and games.

What changes the meaning

Being threatened with a gun. Feeling under pressure or in danger; a confrontation you fear.

Being shot. Being hurt suddenly — by criticism, rejection, bad news.

Holding a gun. Power, anger, or the wish to defend yourself.

Shooting someone. Anger toward that person or what they represent; or ending something decisively.

A gun that will not fire. Feeling powerless at the critical moment; an effort that does not land.

Hiding a gun. Concealed anger, or a capacity for aggression you keep out of sight.

Finding a gun. Discovering a power or a danger you did not know was there.

Someone else with a gun. A person in your life who seems volatile or controlling.

Giving up a gun. Choosing to lay down a fight, or letting go of defensiveness.

A water pistol or toy gun. Aggression that is playful, harmless or not taken seriously — yours or someone else's.

Cleaning or loading a gun. Preparing for a confrontation, or rehearsing a hard conversation.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring gun dreams often accompany long periods of conflict, especially when anger is not being expressed directly. The gun keeps appearing because the force behind it has not found another outlet.

They also follow frightening real experiences: violence, threats, or living in a place where guns are present. Dreams after such events can be intense and repetitive, and they are a reason to talk with someone, not a sign that something is wrong with you.

If you are afraid for your safety in waking life, the dream is not the thing to interpret. Contact people you trust or the emergency services where you live.

In Jungian terms

In December 1913, during the most difficult period of his life, Jung dreamt that he and an unknown companion lay in wait in the mountains and shot Siegfried, the hero of German legend, with rifles as he came down the slope at dawn in a chariot made of the bones of the dead. Afterwards a heavy rain began, and Jung felt an urgent need to escape before the murder was discovered. He woke shaken, and later understood the dream as the end of a heroic ideal he had been living by — the belief that will alone could force his way through everything.

In his account, the killing in the dream was not about violence toward a person. It was about the end of an attitude that had served its purpose and now had to go.

Gun dreams can carry that meaning too. Sometimes what is being shot is not an enemy but a way of being that has become too heavy to carry.
