Hair

Hair in dreams is about how we look to ourselves and to others. Losing it, cutting it and changing it are three different stories.

What it usually means

Hair is one of the most visible things about a person and one of the easiest to change, which makes it a natural dream image for identity. It is how we present ourselves, how others recognise us at a distance, and often the first thing that shifts when we decide to become someone slightly different.

Hair dreams tend to concern self-image and vitality. Thick, healthy hair often goes with a sense of strength and confidence; thinning, falling or damaged hair tends to go with worry about ageing, attractiveness, health or control. Many cultures link hair with strength — Samson is only the best-known example — and dreams can borrow that association. Hair is also one of the few parts of the body that others touch and look after — a parent braiding it, a hairdresser, a partner — so hair dreams can be about being cared for, or about who is allowed close.

As with teeth, it is worth starting with the literal. If you are losing hair, colouring it, growing it out, or have just had a haircut you regret, the dream may simply be continuing that concern.

What changes the meaning

Hair falling out. The most common hair dream, and a close relative of teeth falling out. Usually about loss of control, ageing, or fear of how you appear to others.

Cutting your own hair. A deliberate change: letting go of an old image, ending a chapter, or taking back control.

Someone else cutting your hair. A change being made to you rather than by you. Note whether you agreed to it and how it turned out.

A haircut gone wrong. Fear of a change that will be visible and hard to undo.

Very long hair. Growth, time, something allowed to develop over years. Sometimes also the weight of the past carried along.

Grey or white hair. Ageing, or wisdom and authority. The feeling on waking tells you which.

Tangled hair. Muddled thinking, or a situation that has knotted itself. Combing it out is often the dream's own suggestion.

A wig, or someone else's hair. An image that is not quite yours — a role, an expectation, a version of yourself you are wearing for others.

Washing or brushing hair. Care, renewal, putting yourself in order before facing something.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring hair dreams usually follow periods of change in how you see yourself: a new job, a breakup, a birthday with a round number, an illness. They often stop once the new image has settled.

If the dream is always about losing hair and you are not, it is worth asking where else you feel something is being lost slowly, in small pieces, without your permission. If you are losing hair, the dream is doing ordinary work, and talking to a doctor may help with both the hair and the worry.

It can also help to notice whose opinion of your hair the dream is worried about. Hair dreams are often shaped by an audience: a parent who had views, a workplace with a dress code, a partner's preferences.

In Jungian terms

Jungian readers often treat hair as an image of thought and vitality growing from the head — energy that can be cultivated, cut back or lost. Changing hair in a dream can mark a change in the persona, the face presented to the world, and sometimes a wish to step out from behind it.

Cutting hair appears in rites of passage across cultures, from the monastic tonsure to mourning customs, marking a deliberate break between one stage of life and the next. A dream haircut can carry that weight: a readiness, or a fear, to become someone the old image cannot contain.

The image asks what you want people to see when they look at you, and whether that is still you.
