Hands

Hands are how you act on the world. Dreams about them are usually about capability — what you can grasp, make, give or let go.

What it usually means

Hands do almost everything. They work, make, hold, give, take, push away and reach out. Dreams about hands are therefore usually about action: what you are able to do in a situation, and how you are doing it.

The question of grip comes first. Many sayings point the same way — getting a grip, having things in hand, letting something slip through your fingers. Dreams use hands to show whether a situation feels manageable or is escaping your control.

Hands are also how people connect. They shake, hold, stroke, help and hit. A dream about another person's hands, or about touching hands, is often about trust, help or tension in a relationship.

And hands make things. For people who create — cooks, artists, surgeons, builders, writers at a keyboard — dream hands can carry everything they feel about their craft and their ability to practise it.

Worth saying plainly: hands that go numb or will not obey in a dream may simply be numb. Sleeping on an arm presses on a nerve, and the tingling or weakness can enter the dream directly. People who dream lucidly also report that hands look strange in dreams — too many fingers, shifting shapes — which some use as a sign that they are dreaming.

What changes the meaning

Hands that will not work. Helplessness; wanting to act and being unable to.

Injured or bleeding hands. Harm to your ability to work or create; something done that hurt you.

Dirty hands. Guilt or involvement in something you disapprove of.

Washing your hands. Wanting to be clear of responsibility, or to start again.

Holding hands. Closeness, support, trust in a shared direction.

Letting go of someone's hand. Separation, independence, or fear of losing someone.

Someone else's hands on you. Help or intrusion, depending on the feeling; questions of consent and boundaries.

Hands of a stranger. Help or influence from an unexpected quarter.

Empty hands. Having nothing to offer, or nothing to hold on to; sometimes freedom.

Making something with your hands. Creative energy; a wish to build or shape your life directly.

Extra or missing fingers. Something unusual in your capacities; often simply the dream's own instability.

Shaking hands. An agreement, a reconciliation, or a deal you are not sure you want.

An open palm held out. Asking or offering, depending on which way it faces.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring hand dreams often appear when work or care demands a great deal: new parenthood, nursing a relative, physically demanding jobs. The hands become the picture of everything you are carrying out.

They also return when your ability to act is restricted — by illness, by rules, by other people's decisions.

If you keep dreaming that your hands fail, it may help to note in what situation they fail. The dream often points to one specific area where you feel unable to act, not to life as a whole.

Some people notice that hand dreams fade once they start doing something physical with the problem — writing it out by hand, cooking, building, gardening. The dream had been asking for exactly that.

In Jungian terms

Jung trusted the hands more than many thinkers do. Writing about ways of reaching the unconscious, he observed that the hands often know how to solve a riddle with which the intellect has wrestled in vain. He meant it practically: drawing, modelling and building could carry a problem forward when thinking about it had stalled.

He followed his own advice. During a crisis in his late thirties he went down to the lakeshore and played the building game he had loved as a boy, making a small village of stones, and found that his thoughts cleared as he built. Later in life he carved inscriptions into stone at his tower at Bollingen.

A hand dream can be read in the same spirit. If the dream showed your hands at work on something, it may be worth trying that work awake — not to interpret it, but to let the hands go first.

This page gives the general reading. Onar keeps your dreams on your device, lets you mark the symbols you saw, and asks the questions that tie them to the night you actually had — including the ones that keep returning. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is analysed by a machine.
