Jealousy

Jealousy is the fear of losing what — or whom — we love. Dreams use it to show insecurity, comparison and needs we have not admitted.

What it usually means

Jealousy mixes love, fear and anger. It arises when we feel that someone might take what matters to us — a partner's affection, a friend's attention, a place at work. Dreams about jealousy are very common, even in secure relationships. They usually concern insecurity and needs: fear of being replaced, comparison with others, and longing for reassurance.

Insecurity is the first theme. Dreaming that a partner is unfaithful is one of the most frequent dreams of all. It usually reflects your own fears, not facts about your partner.

Fear of loss is the second. Jealousy dreams often appear during change — a new job, a baby, a move — when relationships shift and attention is divided.

Comparison is the third. Being jealous of a friend or colleague in a dream can reflect envy of their success, appearance or freedom — and point to what you want for yourself.

Unmet needs are another meaning. Jealousy often signals a need for closeness, recognition or security that is not being met.

Being envied is a quieter theme. Dreams of someone being jealous of you can reflect awareness of your own success, or worry about others' reactions.

Self-worth is a related idea. Jealousy grows where we doubt our value. Such dreams can reflect how deserving of love you feel.

Admiration is a related theme. Jealousy and admiration are close. A dream in which jealousy of someone turns into curiosity about them can show a quality you could develop in yourself.

Worth saying plainly: dreams of infidelity do not predict it. If jealousy in waking life becomes constant or controlling, talking with your partner or a specialist can help.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring jealousy dreams often appear during periods of insecurity — new relationships, after past betrayals, during big life changes.

They also come when a person compares themselves constantly with others, especially through social media.

If you keep dreaming of jealousy, ask what you fear losing and what you want. The answer often points to a need rather than to another person.

Some people find jealousy dreams ease after an honest conversation with their partner. Shared reassurance often reaches the night too.

In Jungian terms

In Shakespeare's *Othello*, the villain Iago plants suspicion in the mind of the general Othello, convincing him that his faithful wife Desdemona loves another. With bitter irony, Iago himself warns: "O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on." Built on nothing but a lost handkerchief and whispers, Othello's jealousy destroys him and the woman he loves.

Jungian readers see in Iago the inner voice that feeds on insecurity and turns love into suspicion. The monster grows not from evidence, but from what it is fed.

A jealousy dream may show that voice. What is it feeding on — and what would starve it?
