What it usually means
A journey is movement with meaning. It has a start, a road and, usually, a destination, though the road is often more important than the arrival. People travel for work, for love, for escape and for discovery. Dreams about a journey usually concern your path through life: where you are going, how you feel about the route, and what you are leaving behind.
Change is the first theme. Setting out in a dream often reflects a transition — a new job, a move, a relationship beginning or ending.
Direction is the second. Maps, signs and crossroads in journey dreams can reflect decisions about which way to go next.
Growth is the third. Journeys change travellers. Such dreams can reflect learning, maturing and becoming someone new.
Uncertainty is another meaning. Getting lost, missing connections or forgetting the destination can reflect doubts about where life is heading.
Letting go is a quieter theme. To travel light, you leave things behind. A journey dream can reflect releasing possessions, habits or old roles.
Time is a related theme. Long journeys measure days and seasons. A dream of travelling can reflect the passing of life itself.
Companionship is another meaning. Who travels with you matters. Such dreams can reflect the people who share your path, and those who have left it.
Worth saying plainly: holidays, commutes and travel plans often bring journeys into dreams in very simple ways.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring journey dreams often appear during transitions — moves, career changes, separations, retirement — when life is literally or figuratively on the move.
They also come to people who feel stuck and long for change.
If you keep dreaming of a journey, notice how you travel and what you carry. Lighter luggage in later dreams often follows real letting go.
Others dream of the same road again and again, which can reflect a path they keep returning to in life.
Some people dream of journeys with someone they have lost. Such dreams can reflect a sense that the person still walks beside them.
In Jungian terms
In the spring of 1689 the Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō set out from Edo on foot with his companion Sora, to walk through the north of Japan. His travel journal, *The Narrow Road to the Deep North*, opens with the thought that the months and days are travellers of eternity, and the passing years are travellers too. Bashō says the urge to wander had long possessed him. He mended his clothes, prepared for the road, gave up his small house to others and left. The journey took him months, through mountains, temples and coasts, and became one of the great works of Japanese literature.
Jungian readers see in Bashō a journey taken as a way of being: not only reaching places, but living lightly and attentively through time.
A journey dream may invite that way of travelling. We are on the road already — the days are travelling with us.
