Kissing

A kiss joins two people for a moment. In dreams it often joins you to a quality the other person carries — closeness more than romance.

What it usually means

Kissing dreams are among the most searched dreams there are, mostly because they are so often surprising. People dream of kissing a colleague, a friend's partner, a celebrity, a stranger or an ex they have no wish to see again, and wake up wondering what it says about them.

Usually it says less than they fear. A kiss in a dream is very often about closeness rather than desire: a wish to be near someone, to be accepted, to be on good terms. It can also be about a quality the other person represents. Kissing a confident colleague may be about wanting some of that confidence; kissing a gentle friend may be about wanting more gentleness in your own life.

Of course, some kissing dreams are simply about attraction, and there is nothing wrong with that. Dreams give feelings room that waking life does not, and a dream kiss is not a decision or a betrayal.

The kind of kiss matters. A warm, easy kiss usually reflects affection and comfort. An awkward or unwanted kiss more often reflects pressure, boundaries being crossed, or a relationship that feels out of balance.

What changes the meaning

Kissing your partner. Closeness and security, or a wish for more of it.

Kissing a stranger. Openness to something new, or a quality you have not yet recognised in yourself.

Kissing a friend. Affection, closeness, sometimes curiosity about the friendship's depth. Rarely a sign of romance.

Kissing an ex. Unfinished feelings, or a part of yourself you associate with that time.

Kissing a boss or colleague. Wanting recognition, alignment or closeness at work; sometimes ambition.

Kissing a celebrity. Admiration, or a wish for the qualities they represent.

An unwanted kiss. Boundaries crossed; feeling pressured or not listened to.

A kiss on the forehead or hand. Respect, protection, tenderness without romance.

Being unable to kiss someone. Distance, hesitation, or closeness that is wanted but blocked.

A first kiss. A new beginning — in love, work or friendship — and the nervousness that comes with it.

A goodbye kiss. An ending you are accepting, or one you are not ready for.

Watching others kiss. Feeling left out, or noticing an alliance you are not part of.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring kissing dreams often appear during periods of loneliness or after a long time without physical affection. They can also follow new relationships, as the mind processes closeness that is still unfamiliar.

If you keep dreaming of kissing someone you would never choose in waking life, it can help to ask what that person stands for. The repetition usually points to a quality, not to the person.

Partners sometimes worry when they dream of kissing someone else. Such dreams are very common in long, stable relationships and usually say more about novelty, attention or a quality you miss than about the relationship itself.

If the dreams involve unwanted kisses and leave you uneasy, notice whether your boundaries are being respected in waking life. Dreams sometimes register that before we say it aloud.

In Jungian terms

Jung spent years on a sixteenth-century alchemical book, the *Rosarium philosophorum*, whose woodcuts show a king and a queen meeting, embracing and finally merging into one figure. In his essay *The Psychology of the Transference* he read these images as pictures of the *coniunctio*, the union of opposites within a person: conscious and unconscious, masculine and feminine, thought and feeling.

In that light, a dream kiss is often less about the other person than about a union happening inside. Something that was separate in you is being brought close, and the dream gives it the most human form it can.

That is why such dreams can feel so moving and so puzzling at once. They are about joining, and the partner in the dream is often simply the face that the other half wears.
