What it usually means
Laughter is one of the oldest human sounds. It shows pleasure, eases tension and signals to others that all is well. It can also hide embarrassment, mock, or burst out at the wrong moment. Dreams about laughing usually concern this range: joy and relief on one side, nervousness and exposure on the other.
Joy is the first theme. Laughing freely in a dream often reflects contentment, or a need for lightness in a heavy time. People sometimes wake still smiling from such dreams.
Relief is the second. Laughter often arrives when tension breaks. A dream of laughing after danger or conflict can mark a release that the dreamer is ready for, even if waking life has not caught up.
Connection is the third. Shared laughter bonds people. Laughing with friends, family or a partner in a dream can reflect closeness — or a longing for it.
Mockery is another meaning. Being laughed at is one of the most common social fears. Dreams of people laughing at you often reflect worries about looking foolish, failing in public or not being taken seriously.
Nervous laughter is a quieter theme. Laughing when something is not funny — at bad news, at a funeral, in danger — can reflect discomfort, or a feeling that is too large to meet head-on.
Perspective is a related theme. Laughter often comes when we suddenly see a situation from the outside. A dream in which a serious problem becomes funny may be offering a lighter, more distant view of it.
Worth saying plainly: comedies, funny videos and jokes from the day often return at night. If you laughed hard before sleep, the dream may simply be continuing the mood.
What changes the meaning
Laughing with friends. Belonging; ease; good relationships.
Laughing uncontrollably. Release; tension leaving the body.

Laughing alone. Private joy; or an inside joke with yourself.
A child laughing. Innocence; a playful part of you returning.
Hearing laughter you cannot locate. Feeling left out; or unseen joy.
Trying not to laugh. Holding back a reaction; social pressure.
Laughing until crying. Strong mixed feelings; deep release.
An unpleasant, mocking laugh. Self-criticism; an inner judge.
Laughing in a dangerous situation. Courage; or denial of a risk.
When it keeps coming back
Recurring laughing dreams often appear during stressful periods, as if the mind is offering balance to the strain of the day.
Dreams of being laughed at tend to return before exposure: presentations, new jobs, first dates, publishing work.
If you keep dreaming of laughter, notice who is laughing and with whom. Shared laughter and mocking laughter point in very different directions.
Some people dream of laughing with someone they have lost. Such dreams often bring comfort rather than pain, and are worth remembering.
In Jungian terms
In the Book of Genesis, three visitors tell the aged Abraham that his wife Sarah will have a son. Sarah, listening inside the tent, laughs to herself — she is far too old. When the child is born, he is named Isaac, which means "he laughs", and Sarah says that God has made laughter for her. The laugh of disbelief becomes the laugh of joy, and gives the child his name.
Jungian readers see in the story how laughter can stand at the edge of the impossible. We laugh when something does not fit our expectations — and sometimes what does not fit is exactly what is about to be born.
A laughing dream may hold that double meaning. What you laugh at may be closer to coming true than you think.
