What it usually means
For thousands of years the lion has been the image of power: on coats of arms, temple gates, coins and flags. It is strong, but its strength is of a particular kind — confident, visible and unhurried. A lion does not need to prove anything. In dreams it usually brings questions of power, courage and pride.
Who holds that power matters. A lion facing you may stand for someone in authority — a parent, a boss, a judge — or for the force of a situation you feel unable to stand up to. A lion beside you, or a lion you become, more often reflects your own strength: the courage to speak, lead or claim your place.
Pride is the other side. A lion can be noble, but also vain, angry or domineering. The dream may be pointing to pride that protects your dignity, or pride that keeps you from asking for help.
Lions also live in prides, with roles and hierarchies, and dreams about lion groups often reflect family or workplace politics.
The lion is also one of the oldest images of courage in story. Daniel survives the lions' den by faith; Androcles is spared by the lion he once helped; and in *The Wizard of Oz* the Cowardly Lion learns that he had courage all along. Dreams sometimes borrow these old plots, and a lion that does not attack can be as meaningful as one that does.
What changes the meaning
Being chased by a lion. Avoiding a confrontation with authority, or with your own ambition.
A lion attack. Feeling overpowered by a dominant person or a situation where you have little say.
A calm lion watching you. Power at rest; a sense of being judged or simply seen by something strong.
Taming or riding a lion. Mastering your own strength or temper; using force with control.
A caged lion. Power held back — your own, or someone's whose strength has been restrained.
A lioness. Fierce protection, competence, the one who actually hunts and provides.
A lion cub. Strength that is still small; a new confidence or ambition.
A roaring lion. Anger, authority asserting itself, or a voice that wants to be heard.
A wounded lion. Pride or power that has been hurt; a strong figure brought low.
A lion in your home. Authority or ambition entering private life, or a dominant presence in the family.
Hiding from a lion. Keeping a low profile to avoid attention, judgment or competition.
Becoming a lion. Claiming courage, or fear that ambition will make you harsh.
When it keeps coming back
Recurring lion dreams often appear when questions of authority are active: a new role, a promotion, conflict with a superior, a moment when you have to take charge. The dream keeps returning until you find a way to stand your ground.
They can also follow periods of feeling small. A lion that gradually stops frightening you is a common image of confidence returning.
If the lion is always angry, notice where your own anger has been kept on a short leash. Dreams sometimes give it the body of a lion because that is how large it has become.
In Jungian terms
In the alchemical texts Jung studied for decades, the lion is a frequent figure. Often it is a green or red lion, and in some famous images a green lion is shown devouring the sun. Jung read such images as pictures of raw, fiery energy at an early stage of inner change: passion, desire and will in their untransformed state, powerful enough to swallow clear consciousness if left unchecked.
The alchemists did not try to kill the lion. Their aim was to transform it, so that the same energy that devoured could later warm and illuminate.
That is the shape of many lion dreams. The strength in them is not the problem to be removed; it is the material, and the dream shows what state it is in.
