What it usually means
Lizards are ancient, quick and quiet. They warm themselves in the sun, freeze when watched and dart away in an instant. Many can drop their tails to escape and grow new ones. Dreams about lizards usually concern instinct and survival: basic, practical responses to life, and the ability to recover from loss.
Instinct is the first theme. Lizards act without hesitation. A lizard dream can point to gut reactions, the oldest layer of response beneath thought and feeling.
Renewal is the second. A lizard that loses its tail survives and regrows it. Dreams of this can reflect letting go of something in order to escape a trap, and the confidence that what is lost can grow back.
Adaptability is the third. Lizards live in deserts, forests and cities, and some change colour. A lizard dream can reflect your ability to fit into new surroundings.
Coldness is another meaning. Lizards are cold-blooded. A dream lizard can point to emotional distance — in you or someone else — or to a calm, unsentimental way of handling a crisis.
Warmth-seeking is a quieter theme. Lizards need the sun to move. A lizard basking can reflect a need for rest, comfort and energy from outside.
Stillness is a related theme. Lizards can stay motionless for long periods, then move very fast. A lizard dream can reflect a time of watchful waiting before a quick decision.
Age is another meaning. Reptiles are among the oldest animals on earth. A lizard can stand for the oldest, most basic part of the mind — the part that keeps us alive without asking our opinion.
Worth saying plainly: travel to warm countries, pet reptiles and garden lizards often appear in dreams directly.

A lizard turning into a dragon. A small instinct growing powerful.
A dead lizard. Loss of vitality; a survival strategy no longer working.
When it keeps coming back
Recurring lizard dreams often appear in survival mode — after loss, in financial trouble, during illness — when life is reduced to basics.
They also come when a person has had to let go of something important to protect themselves.
People in hot climates dream of them simply because they are everywhere; the meaning then often lies in what the lizard does rather than in its presence.
If you keep dreaming of lizards, notice whether they are basking or fleeing. Rest and escape are both instincts, and the dream may show which one you need.
Some people dream of lizards regrowing tails as they recover. The dream follows healing step by step.
In Jungian terms
In his autobiography the Renaissance goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini recalls that when he was about five, his father saw a small lizard-like creature living in the flames of the fire and called him to look. Then he boxed the boy's ear, so that he would never forget that he had seen a salamander. Paracelsus described salamanders as the elemental spirits of fire.
Jungian readers see in the salamander an image of a living core that survives the fire — the part of a person that endures intense experience and is not consumed by it.
A lizard dream may point to that part. What in you can live inside the flames?
