What it usually means
A mask covers the face, the part of us that most reveals feeling. It hides identity, changes expression and lets a person become someone else for a time. Dreams about masks usually concern that hiding: the face you show others, and what it covers.
Concealment is the first theme. Wearing a mask in a dream often reflects a feeling that you are hiding something — a feeling, an opinion, a part of your history — or that you are playing a role that is not fully you.
Deception is the second. Someone else in a mask can stand for a person whose intentions you cannot read, or a situation in which appearances do not match reality.
Protection is the third. Masks protect as well as hide: medical masks, carnival masks, ritual masks. Sometimes a mask in a dream is a sensible shield in a situation where full exposure would be unsafe.
Transformation belongs here too. In theatre and ritual, putting on a mask lets a person become a god, an animal or a character. Mask dreams can carry that sense of play and freedom — the relief of not being yourself for a while.
The hardest version is the mask that will not come off. Dreams of being unable to remove a mask, or finding that the mask has become your face, often appear when a role has taken over a person's life.
Worth saying plainly: masks became part of everyday life for many people during the pandemic years, and dreams of medical masks can simply reflect that memory — distance, caution, faces only half seen.

Unmasking someone. Discovering the truth about a person or situation.
A carnival mask. Play, freedom, release from ordinary rules.
A frightening mask. A fear given a face; something threatening behind appearances.
A mask of your own face. Feeling like an imitation of yourself.
Many masks. Many roles; pressure to be different things to different people.
A broken mask. A role collapsing; the truth breaking through.
A medical mask. Protection, caution, distance from others.
Giving someone a mask. Asking them to hide, or helping them to protect themselves.
When it keeps coming back
Recurring mask dreams often appear when a person lives with a gap between public and private life — a demanding job, a family secret, a hidden identity.
They also come in periods of change, when an old role no longer fits but has not yet been put down.
Masks are also central to celebration in many cultures: carnival in Venice and Rio, festivals of the dead, theatre traditions across Asia. People raised with these customs may dream of masks as joy and freedom rather than hiding.
If you keep dreaming of masks, notice how you feel when the mask comes off. Relief and fear point to very different situations.
In Jungian terms
The word persona comes from the Latin for the mask worn by actors in ancient theatre. Jung took it as the name for the face we present to society, and described it as a compromise between the individual and society about what a person should appear to be. Everyone needs one; trouble begins when a person identifies with it completely and forgets the face underneath.
Jungian readers see dream masks as the persona made visible. A mask that comes off easily shows a healthy role; a mask that cannot be removed shows a role that has swallowed the person.
The practical question after such a dream is simple, and not always comfortable. Who are you when no role is required?
