Pride

Pride can stand a person upright or lift them too high. Dreams use it for self-worth and achievement — and for the danger of forgetting our limits.

What it usually means

Pride has two faces. One is healthy: the warmth of a job well done, the dignity of standing up for yourself. The other is inflated: boasting, comparing, believing you are above others. Dreams about pride usually concern self-worth: how you show it, and what happens when it grows too large or too small.

Achievement is the first theme. A dream of feeling proud often follows real effort. It can reflect satisfaction you have not yet allowed yourself awake.

Self-worth is the second. Pride is tied to how we value ourselves. Dreams of wounded pride can reflect criticism, rejection or being overlooked.

Comparison is the third. Pride often measures itself against others. Such dreams can reflect competition, envy or the habit of ranking yourself.

The fall is another meaning. An old proverb warns that pride comes before a fall. A dream of boasting, then disaster, can reflect caution about overreaching.

Dignity is a quieter theme. Sometimes pride means refusing to be humiliated. Such dreams can reflect a need to stand your ground.

Love is a related idea. Being proud of a child, a friend or a partner is a form of love. These dreams are often tender.

Shame is a related theme. Pride and shame are close relatives. A dream of humiliation can reflect the fear beneath a proud surface.

Worth saying plainly: awards, exams, praise at work or a family success often bring pride into dreams in simple ways.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring pride dreams often appear after success or failure, when a sense of worth is shifting.

They also come to people who grew up needing to prove themselves, or who rarely heard praise.

If you keep dreaming of pride, notice whether it feels warm or brittle. Warm pride usually rests on something real; brittle pride is often guarding a wound.

Others dream of being proud of someone they have lost. Such dreams can carry love and grief together.

Some people dream of pride turning into shame. Such dreams can reflect a wish to be valued without having to perform.

In Jungian terms

In Book VI of Ovid's *Metamorphoses*, Niobe, queen of Thebes, has seven sons and seven daughters. When the women of the city gather to honour the goddess Leto, Niobe interrupts the rite. Why worship Leto, she asks, who has only two children, when she herself has fourteen? Leto's children, Apollo and Artemis, answer with their arrows. Niobe's sons fall, then her daughters, while she begs for the youngest to be spared. Sitting among her dead, she grows rigid with grief and turns to stone. A whirlwind carries the rock to her homeland, where it still weeps.

Jungian readers see in Niobe what happens when the ego claims what is not its own. Her children were gifts, not trophies; by comparing, she made them into proof of her greatness. Her stone is grief frozen — feeling that can no longer move.

A pride dream may hold both sides. Love what you have, and hold it without measuring it against anyone.
