Returning

To return is to go back to a place that has gone on without you. Dreams use it for homecoming and memory — and for the hope of being welcomed.

What it usually means

Returning is a journey in reverse: back to a house, a town, a person, a former self. Nothing is quite as it was, because both the place and the traveller have changed. Dreams about returning usually concern belonging: where home is, what we left behind, and whether we will be welcomed back.

Home is the first theme. Many return dreams take the dreamer to a childhood house or hometown. They can reflect a longing for security or roots.

Memory is the second. Going back in a dream often means going back in time. Such dreams can reflect unfinished feelings from earlier in life.

Reconciliation is the third. Returning to someone after a quarrel can reflect a wish to mend what was broken.

Change is another meaning. Dreams often show the return as strange: rooms rearranged, strangers in the kitchen. You cannot go back to exactly what was.

Shame is a quieter theme. Some returns are humbling, after failure or wrongdoing. Such dreams can reflect fear of judgement.

Welcome is a related theme. Being received warmly is one of the deepest comforts. Such dreams can reflect hope of forgiveness.

Worth saying plainly: holidays, visits to family, reunions and moving house often bring returning into dreams directly.

What changes the meaning

Returning to a childhood home. Longing for safety; roots; early memories.

Returning to find everything changed. Time passing; you cannot go back.

Being welcomed back. Acceptance; forgiveness; belonging.

Being turned away. Fear of rejection; a door that has closed.

Returning to an old school or job. Unfinished lessons; old roles.

Returning to a former partner. Unresolved feelings; nostalgia.

Being unable to find the way back. Feeling lost.

Returning after a long journey. Integration; bringing experience home.

Returning with nothing. Failure; humility; starting again.

Returning to a country you left. Migration; divided belonging.

Someone else returning to you. Hope; reunion; a loss healed.

Returning to a place that no longer exists. Grief; memory as the only home.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring return dreams often appear after a move, a migration or a long period away, when the old home still pulls.

They also come in middle age and later, when people look back over their lives.

If you keep dreaming of returning, notice how you are received. A warm welcome or a closed door often mirrors how you feel about your past.

Others dream of returning to people they have lost touch with. Such dreams can reflect a wish to reach out.

Some people dream of a journey home that never ends. Such dreams can reflect a long search for belonging.

In Jungian terms

In Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells of a younger son who asks for his inheritance, goes to a far country and wastes it. When famine comes he ends up feeding pigs, hungry enough to envy their food. There he comes to himself and decides to go home, rehearsing what he will say: that he is no longer worthy to be called a son, and asks only to be a hired servant. But while he is still far off, his father sees him, runs to him, embraces him and kisses him. He calls for a robe, a ring and a feast. The elder brother, who never left, is angry and will not go in.

Jungian readers see in the story two sides of the psyche: the part that strays and the part that stays and resents. The father's welcome holds both, without waiting for the speech to be finished.

A return dream may hold that open door. Someone is still watching the road.
