What it usually means
Waiting fills much of life: for a bus, a reply, a result, a person, a change. Its time feels different — slow, stretched, hard to use. Dreams about waiting usually concern the space between now and what is hoped for: patience, uncertainty, and the question of how long to keep waiting.
Uncertainty is the first theme. A waiting dream often reflects not knowing — an outcome that depends on others, a decision still to be made.
Hope is the second. People wait for what matters to them. Such a dream can reflect a longing for someone, a chance or a better time.
Frustration is the third. Waiting rooms, stalled trains, endless queues: these dreams can reflect a feeling that life is not moving.
Passivity is another meaning. Sometimes waiting becomes a habit. A dream of waiting without end can ask whether you are waiting for something you could act on yourself.
Patience is a quieter theme. Some things cannot be hurried. Calm waiting in a dream can reflect trust in timing.
Dependence is a related theme. Waiting for someone else to arrive, decide or give permission can reflect a feeling that your life is in others' hands.
Readiness is another meaning. Waiting is also preparation. A dream of waiting at a door, dressed and ready, can reflect anticipation of a new stage.
Worth saying plainly: delayed flights, hospital appointments, exam results and long queues often appear in dreams in simple ways.

Being kept waiting. Feeling unimportant; resentment.
Keeping someone else waiting. Guilt; delay; responsibility.
Waiting calmly. Trust; acceptance of timing.
Waiting at a door. Anticipation; being on the threshold.
Giving up and leaving. Choosing to move on.
When it keeps coming back
Recurring waiting dreams often appear during long, uncertain periods — job searches, medical tests, visa applications, relationships that cannot move forward.
They also come to people who habitually put their own lives on hold for others.
If you keep dreaming of waiting, notice whether anything arrives. A dream in which you finally stop waiting can reflect a decision forming awake.
Others dream of waiting for someone from the past, a sign of longing that has not yet found its end.
Some people dream of waiting peacefully, by water or in a garden. Such dreams can reflect acceptance of a slower time.
In Jungian terms
In Samuel Beckett's play *Waiting for Godot*, first staged in Paris in 1953, two tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a bare tree on a country road for someone called Godot. They do not know exactly who he is or why they are waiting, only that they must. They pass the time talking, quarrelling, eating a carrot, thinking of leaving. Towards evening a boy arrives with a message: Mr Godot will not come this evening, but surely tomorrow. In the second act much the same thing happens again. At the end they agree to go, and do not move.
Jungian readers see in the play a portrait of waiting as a way of life: hope handed over to someone outside, who is always about to arrive. The question it leaves is what might begin if the waiting stopped.
A waiting dream may ask the same. Godot may come tomorrow — but today is also yours.
