What it usually means
A waterfall is water in free fall: loud, powerful and never still. It wears down stone, fills the air with spray and feeds the river below. Dreams about waterfalls usually concern release and renewal: emotions pouring out, something being washed clean, and the power of forces you cannot stop.
Emotional release is the first theme. Water often stands for feeling in dreams, and a waterfall is feeling at full force. Such dreams can come when emotions that have been held back begin to pour out — tears, anger, love, relief.
Cleansing is the second. Standing under a waterfall is an ancient image of purification. A dream of being washed by falling water can reflect a wish to start fresh, or a sense that something old is being rinsed away.
Power is the third. Waterfalls are overwhelming. A dream of watching a huge waterfall can reflect awe, or the sense of being faced with something much stronger than yourself.
Letting go is another meaning. Water at the edge does not hesitate. A waterfall dream can point to a moment of surrender — accepting change instead of fighting it.
Renewal is a quieter theme. Waterfalls are full of life: rainbows in the spray, plants on wet rocks, fresh air. A calm, beautiful waterfall in a dream often carries a sense of vitality and peace.
Sound is a related theme. The roar of a waterfall drowns out every other noise. A dream of such sound can reflect a wish to silence worries for a while, or a feeling so loud it fills everything.
Worth saying plainly: trips to waterfalls, nature films and even the sound of a running shower can find their way into dreams.

When it keeps coming back
Recurring waterfall dreams often appear when a person has been holding feelings in for a long time and is close to letting them out.
They also come during big transitions, when life is moving faster than one can steer.
If you keep dreaming of a waterfall, notice where you stand: under it, beside it, at the top or far away. Your position often reflects how close you are to your own feelings.
Some people dream of waterfalls after crying for the first time in a long while. The dream continues the release.
In Jungian terms
In Japanese Shinto practice, a purification ritual called misogi is sometimes performed by standing beneath a waterfall. The person enters the cold water, often chanting, and lets the force of the falling stream wash body and mind clean. The practice, also known as takigyō, is still followed at mountain shrines today.
Jungian readers see in misogi an image of release that is not chaotic but chosen: stepping deliberately into the force of feeling in order to be renewed by it.
A waterfall dream may offer that choice. The water will fall either way; the question is whether you step into it.
