Wedding

Wedding dreams are about commitment and union, and often not about marriage at all. Whose wedding it was matters most.

What it usually means

Weddings in dreams are rarely forecasts. They tend to appear around commitment of any kind: a new job, a move, a decision that joins two parts of life which were separate before. The ceremony gives shape to the moment of saying yes and being seen to say it.

Sometimes, of course, a wedding dream is about a wedding. If you are engaged, planning one, or watching someone close to you marry, the dream may simply be processing the event, with all its logistics and nerves. Anxiety dreams before a real wedding are so common that they are almost a stage of planning.

Beyond the literal, weddings bring together union and threshold. Two things become one, and life on the other side is different. The dream often shows how you feel about crossing into that new arrangement — eager, uneasy, or not quite present.

Wedding dreams also come to people who have been married for years. These are usually about the marriage as it is now — whether the commitment is being renewed, tested, or simply taken for granted.

What changes the meaning

Your own wedding, happily. A commitment that feels right. Often accompanies a decision you have made, or are close to making, with your whole self.

Your own wedding going wrong. Missing rings, clothes that will not fit, guests in the wrong place. Very common before real weddings, and more widely before any commitment with many moving parts.

Marrying a stranger. Joining yourself to something new and not yet known — a role, a project, a side of yourself.

Marrying an ex. Usually less about the person than about a pattern or feeling they stood for, and whether you are about to repeat it.

Marrying someone unlikely. A colleague, a friend, someone you would never choose. Often about a quality of theirs you are taking on rather than about them.

Not knowing who you are marrying. Commitment to something whose shape is unclear. Worth asking what you have agreed to lately without seeing all of it.

Attending someone else's wedding. Witnessing a change in someone close, or a change in your relationship with them.

Being left at the altar, or walking away. Fear of a commitment collapsing, or doubt about one you have made.

A ceremony that never starts. A decision delayed. Something is ready to be joined and keeps being postponed.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring wedding dreams tend to cluster around long decisions: an engagement, moving in together, a partnership at work, a commitment you keep revisiting. They often stop once the decision is made, whichever way it goes.

Dreams of marrying someone other than your partner unsettle many people. They are very rarely about wanting that person. More often they mark a quality the other person stands for, or a commitment elsewhere — to work, to a project — that is competing for the place your partner holds.

If you are not planning a wedding and the dream keeps returning, look at what in your life is asking to be joined: two roles you keep separate, two plans that compete, or a part of yourself you have kept apart from the rest.

In Jungian terms

Jung wrote at length about the coniunctio, the union of opposites, which the alchemists pictured as a sacred marriage of king and queen, sun and moon. For him it described the psyche's work of bringing together what had been split — thinking and feeling, conscious and unconscious, the familiar self and its inner other.

A dream wedding can carry that charge. The partner is then less a person than a counterpart: qualities you lack, are drawn to, or are ready to integrate. How the ceremony goes says something about how ready you are.

The image asks what in your life is ready to be joined, and whether you are willing to stand there and say yes.
