Well

A well reaches down to water hidden underground. Dreams use it for inner resources and depth — and for wisdom that must be drawn up.

What it usually means

A well is a shaft dug down to water that cannot be seen from the surface. For most of history, villages gathered around wells; they meant life, meeting and survival. Dreams about wells usually concern depth and nourishment: the inner sources you draw on, what lies beneath the surface, and the effort it takes to bring it up.

Inner resources are the first theme. Water from a well can reflect strength, creativity or love you can draw on when you need it.

Depth is the second. Looking into a well means looking down into darkness. Such dreams can reflect curiosity about your inner life, or fear of what is there.

Nourishment is the third. Clean, cool water from a well can reflect being refreshed — by rest, friendship, faith or work you love.

Hidden knowledge is another meaning. In many stories wells hold secrets, voices or wisdom. A well dream can reflect a sense that answers lie deeper than thought.

Exhaustion is a quieter theme. A dry well can reflect burnout: giving out more than you take in.

Community is a related theme. Wells were places to meet and talk. A dream of a village well can reflect a longing for belonging.

Wishes are another meaning. Coins thrown into wells carry hopes. Such a dream can reflect a quiet wish you have not shared.

Worth saying plainly: old village wells, wishing wells and stories read in childhood often bring wells into dreams in simple ways.

When it keeps coming back

Recurring well dreams often appear when a person feels drained, giving more than they receive.

They also come during inner work, when people are reaching down into memories and feelings.

If you keep dreaming of a well, notice whether there is water and whether you can reach it. A full well often reflects resources you have not yet used.

Others dream of wells in grandparents' villages or childhood homes, a link to roots and family.

Some people dream of lowering a bucket again and again. Such dreams can reflect patience in a slow process of renewal.

In Jungian terms

In Norse myth, as told in the *Prose Edda*, the world tree Yggdrasil has three roots. Under the root that reaches towards the land of the frost giants lies the well of Mímir, in which wisdom and understanding are hidden. Mímir, its guardian, is full of knowledge because he drinks from it. The All-Father, chief of the Norse gods, came to the well and asked for a single drink. He was granted it only after he gave one of his eyes as a pledge, and the eye stayed in the well.

Jungian readers see in the story the price of deep knowledge. Wisdom from the depths is not free: something of the old way of seeing has to be given up in exchange for a new one.

A well dream may ask what you are willing to give for understanding. Some sight is gained by losing a little.
